Cultural Heritage

SOI Ltd offer advice and services relating to coastal archaeology, coastal zone assessment surveys, and the impacts of proposed development, natural coastal processes and sea level rise on cultural interests.

The skills and expertise available from SOI Ltd in sub-surface and geophysical imaging, geo-chronology and the paleo-environment additionally supports archaeological investigations. Such work has been carried out across the UK, Australia, Argentina, the Philippines, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.

A comprehensive suite of geophysical equipment for use in both marine and terrestrial archaeology is available, including a research vessel with remote operated vehicles, side scan sonar, multibeam swath bathymetry, and land-based equipment such as resistivity, seismic refraction and magnetometry. Modern field survey and sampling equipment, including a DGPS, are also available. These analytical capabilities are supported by fully equipped preparation facilities and the dating of archaeological sediments is possible using the luminescence dating laboratory.

Stable-isotope, pollen and microfossil analysis alongside luminescence dating are also available for palaeoenvironment and palaeodiet studies, while mineralogical and chemical analyses of archaeological material can be carried out.
